The square is named after the cardinal Sisto Riario Sforza, bishop of Naples from 1846, well known for works of charity and care for artistic heritage of Naples; faithful to the Bourbons went into exile in 1861.
In the square rises the "Guglia S. Gennaro", built to vote for eruption of Vesuvius of 1631. This is by Cosimo Fanzago (in the basement, medallion with self-portrait). It is formed by 4 long columns ending with a rich capital ionic, which holds the bronze, statue of Saint Gennaro.
In the bottom of the square there is the right side of the cathedral, with entrance. On the right there is the Monte della Miserciordia (Mount of Mercy), with the adjoining church, of the seventeenth century. It has a facade with two storeys, above a portico with five large arches.
It is one of the largest charitable institutions in the city. He had originated in 1601 by a brotherhood of noble, in order to helping the destitute, to assist the sick, to ransom slaves Christians from the hands of the infidels, to assist the prisoners, to release prisoners for debts, to accommodate pilgrims.
